Praise that "Pastor's Libraries" Equip Tanzanian Pastors

 Jun. 27, 2024 | Tanzania
"Pastor's Libraries" Equip Tanzanian Pastors

Many Tanzanian pastors lack access to biblical training and in-depth study resources needed to help their congregations stand firm in their faith. Front-line workers in central Tanzania recently handed out 706 boxes of “Pastor’s Libraries” containing study Bibles and other Christian educational aids designed to help pastors train themselves. “Even before we can attend a Bible college, it feels now like we have a Bible college at home through these materials,” said one church leader upon receiving the boxed study kit. The kits were distributed to pastors from several denominational groups. “The pastors are so incredibly grateful,” said a front-line worker. “These libraries and materials are far too high of a cost for them to ever purchase on their own.”

Praise because Christians Help the Hungry in Gaza

 Jun. 27, 2024 | Israel
Christians Help the Hungry in Gaza

A pastor in Gaza and his team are regularly providing hot meals to hundreds of people sheltering and trying to survive the current conflict. “We have been able to distribute meals to the people in Rafah and the middle of the Gaza Strip,” the pastor said. “The situation is very dire, and people are desperate for food.” The pastor is grateful for support from the global body of Christ that enables his team to provide aid and hope to the suffering. “May God bless you abundantly for your kindness and compassion towards our brothers and sisters in Gaza,” he said.

Praise and Prayer for this Hispanic Ministry!

Contextualizing the Gospel for Hispanic Immigrants

“When you have to live as an immigrant it changes your worldview,” Brian says.

Shortly after Brian met Jesus in 1995, God gave him a heart for the Hispanic community. As he visited a prison near Chicago, he discovered that 40% of the inmates there were Hispanic. “How will these guys hear the gospel?” Brian thought to himself. That question motivated Brian so much that he committed to learning Spanish over the next 12 months.

As he started studying, he was quickly reminded of why he didn’t do so well in high school Spanish—but that didn’t stop him from trying! The following year, he returned to the prison equipped with slightly better Spanish, and more importantly, some tracts explaining the gospel in Spanish. “Can you help read this to me?” he would say to the Hispanic inmates, handing them a tract. Amazingly, God used Brian’s willing heart and gift for relationships to welcome someone into God’s family on his second day at the prison!

By the time Brian returned home, God had birthed in him a dream of doing something no one else had done: planting Spanish-speaking churches in his town in northern Indiana. The Hispanic community there was small, but growing exponentially. In just a few years, the local Hispanic population had expanded to be 11 times its original size—yet there were very few churches in that area who were ministering to Hispanics.

In 2001, Brian and his wife Tammy got so serious about learning the language, that they moved to Argentina for a year to learn it. And when they returned, they started a Hispanic ministry. The ministry grew, and they even planted a Hispanic church in 2010. Brian pastored it for five years and then raised up a Hispanic pastor to take his place who still leads the church today.

Now Brian is working with Encompass, pursuing his goal of planting three more Hispanic churches in nearby towns as well as a Hispanic Bible school. More and more Hispanics are immigrating to the US each month, and Brian sees that as a move of God. He even developed a sermon titled “What’s God Doing Now?” which he uses to educate other churches on the topic.

In general, there are many evangelism tools available for Spanish-speakers, but few are contextualized specifically for the Hispanic immigrant. As Brian came to realize that, God gave him more and more of a desire to develop tools specifically for that people group. The first of these tools is “Discover the Bible: 12 Bible Stories that Share God’s Message to the Hispanic Soul,” which he’ll soon start beta testing.

If you share Brian’s heart for reaching unreached immigrants, you can partner with him financially or send him an email

Ask God to surround Alma with compassionate believers

Alma Grieves the Loss of Her Only Child
Our global workers recently received a call from their Central Asian friend, Alma,* whose young adult daughter passed away unexpectedly. Alma lost her husband a number of years ago, and now losing her only child has shattered her world. Alma isn’t a believer, but our global workers are reaching out to the believers in her area to see if they can help her in this time of despair. Ask God to surround Alma with compassionate believers who show her Jesus’s love in the midst of this tragedy.

Pray for Dong and his adult sons in Laos. May his sons come to faith in Christ. Help Dong to find food and earn an income.

 Jun. 20, 2024 | Laos

Sons Abandon Christian Father

When Dong became a believer in Jesus Christ, his adult sons became angry that he followed what they saw as a foreign religion. They moved out of his house and took all his farmland and supplies for themselves, leaving him no way to grow food or earn income. Dong appealed to the village chief, who said he would only intervene with the sons if Dong agreed to give up his Christian faith. Dong would not renounce his faith in Christ. Rejection by family and community is a common form of persecution in Laos.

Prayer and Praise for Angola and Thru the Bible ministries

June 20, 2024

Where are we praying today?

Angola

Have good intentions, but still end up giving into bad habits or sin? You aren’t alone. Listen to this story from Angola and be encouraged by the power of God’s Word and His Spirit that can help:

“Your program is changing many things here in our community. Last week a member of the body of elders in our congregation came to us confessing that he used witchcraft to do his work in the church. He said listening to your teaching challenged him to give up that practice, so he obeyed and brought everything to the cross. He said at first it was hard, but the more he prayed and gave God the glory the easier it became. That was a great blessing in the congregation and many other people did the same and God was glorified.”

You don’t have to do it on your own. In fact, if you study God’s Word with us regularly, you know you can’t. So, what’s the secret? In our study of 1 Thessalonians 4 this week, we learned only when we yield to the Holy Spirit can we live a life that pleases God.

Today pray more people in Angola hear God’s Word, choose to follow Jesus, and allow His Spirit to do for them what they can’t do for themselves.

Want to learn more about how God’s Spirit can work in and through your life? Download our free 1 Thessalonians Bible Companion  and Dr. McGee’s digital booklet "Living the Christian Life God’s Way" (from Romans 8). And join us here tomorrow for more great stories of God’s goodness.

Pray for Zach & Míša Harrod on furlough from the Czech Republic now in the USA

Friends!

As you read this, we are somewhere over Iceland or Greenland, en route to the States! Before we touch down, we wanted to share some exciting updates with you all.

It’s Been a Whirlwind!

The last few weeks have been incredibly full, and we are deeply grateful for your prayers. This past Sunday, we hosted an early birthday party for Artie, a “See You at the End of Summer” gathering, and a Father’s Day celebration all rolled into one. We had nearly 40 friends join us, including over 15 kids, making it a truly joyful and bustling event.

Míša outdid herself again with an amazing cake, a piñata, games, and an impressive spread. I (Zach) got creative at the grill, whipping up bacon and garlic-infused burgers. It was heartwarming to see God bringing people around our table, building and deepening relationships.

We were also blessed with a surprise visit from Ondra and Lauren Riegl and their two kids. For those who have followed our journey for the last 20 years, you’ll remember Ondra as one of the first Czechs who responded to the Gospel with me. He and Lauren married in 2009 and moved to the States in 2015. Their visit was a beautiful reminder of why we’re here—because life change happens around the table. Please pray for Ondra, Lauren, and their kids, and for our friends here, that Jesus continues His work in their hearts while we are stateside.
