Hundreds Abducted by Islamists

In early March 2024, Islamic militants raided several boarding schools in northern Nigeria and abducted more than 300 people. “I spoke to a pastor who personally knows an elderly Christian woman who was among those abducted,” a front-line worker shared. “Her son was shot in the arm when trying to protect her and is currently hospitalized.” Officials do not know if the attackers were members of Boko Haram or ISWAP, two Islamist groups active in the area. The attackers demanded ransom to return those who were abducted. Amid the risk, the front-line worker reported that pastors and evangelists in the region are committed to serve. “These realities are not new to them,” he said. “They have already counted the cost of serving Christ in such areas and remain faithful to their calling.”

Abusive Husband Trusts in Christ on Christmas Day

Yasmin, who grew up as a member of the Druze community, became a follower of Christ in 2020. When her family learned of her new faith, they immediately rejected her. Her husband attacked her and attempted to stab her. But the couple eventually reconciled, and Yasmin’s husband, Amir, allowed her to live in their home. Amir gradually became curious about Yasmin’s new faith and would stay up late at night to watch Christian TV channels after others had fallen asleep. In December 2023, he attended the Christmas celebrations at Yasmin’s church. After the sermon, Amir responded to the pastor’s invitation to place his trust in Christ. The church rejoiced in this answer to three years of intercessory prayer for the couple. Yasmin said she had already noticed “a difference in her husband at home and is convinced he is a new believer.”

Church Awaiting Justice Remains Under Attack

Anura and Ayesha lead a church in western Sri Lanka that has been repeatedly attacked in recent years. Some of the perpetrators of these attacks are facing charges in court. However, Ayesha reported, every time the court dates near, groups in the village try to stir up trouble by breaking Buddha statues or throwing human feces on them and then blaming the church for dishonoring Buddhism. So far, no progress has been made in these cases. In 2023, attackers threatened new converts from the villages and pelted stones at their houses. Police have interfered with services and even directly threatened Pastor Anura to stop church services. Pray for Anura, Ayesha and their church to be bold and courageous as they bear suffering and continue to take the gospel to more villages.

Two Underground Church Leaders Face
Serious Health Issues in Chinese Prison

5/15/2024 China (International Christian Concern) – Since two leaders of Ganquan Church in Hefei, Anhui, were arrested last fall, their wives and members of their church family have pleaded for their release. Those pleas have grown more urgent after the two leaders developed serious health problems while in prison.
In November 2023, Communist authorities detained Pastor Zhou Songlin, Elder Ding Zhongfu, and 14 other members of the house church. Pastor Zhou and Elder Ding, both charged with fraud, are the only church members who remain in prison.
“We have heard several similar frontline reports from around China of underground church pastors being charged with fraud-related crimes to destabilize their churches and attack their reputations,” International Christian Concern’s (ICC) regional director for Southeast Asia said. “In this extremely difficult context with increased surveillance and a growing crackdown on unregistered churches in China, ministries like ICC must continue to find creative ways to support our suffering brethren in prison and in unregistered, underground fellowships.”
Pastor Zhou is suffering from an unspecified “serious illness” that his doctors say cannot be properly treated while he is incarcerated. The pastor has stated that he is afraid he will die in prison. Elder Ding is experiencing high blood pressure, chest pain, dizziness, and insomnia.
“ICC strongly urges Chinese officials to immediately release these prisoners, given their serious health challenges, and to drop the charges against all of these church members,” ICC’s regional director added.
Ganquan Church is an underground church that refuses to come under the state-controlled Three-Self Patriotic Movement (TSPM), China’s only legal church. As a result, Ganquan is considered illegal and cannot purchase property. To secure property for worship and other church activities, Pastor Zhou and Elder Ding used church funds to purchase two properties in their own names. Their wives and other church members have argued that strict financial controls were in place and the purchases were not fraudulent.
In a desperate plea to officials to release their husbands, Zhou and Ding’s wives released the following statement, published by Bitter Winter on May 1:
“For more than twenty years, Ganquan Church has been based on the Christian faith, strictly following the teachings of the Bible, honoring God and benefiting people, and self-regulating its congregation, in accordance with the Christian Church’s thousands (of) years of tradition, drawing on its own resources, and maintaining the normal operation of the church. The church has a strict financial management system, and the management and use of all funds are supervised by many people with Elder Ding reporting to the congregation as treasurer. The purchase of the real estate was decided at a meeting of all co-workers, and several trustees were elected to manage them. It also went through the legal process to create notarized and archived documents proving that the properties, in fact, belong to the church.”
For interviews, please email press@persecution.org.
Since 1995, ICC has served the global persecuted church through a three-pronged approach of assistance, advocacy, and awareness. ICC exists to bandage the wounds of persecuted Christians and to build the church in the toughest parts of the world.

1 of 585 Thank you for praying for Lamplighter Ministries

Tip Lewis And His Lamp

Dear partners in prayer,

Thank you so much for your prayers! So much can happen in such a short amount of time. Just over a week ago, our team was performing in Sicily, and now we're back in New York preparing to record the next Lamplighter Theatre drama!

Please keep the Lamplighter Theatre team, the actors, directors, and engineer in your prayers as recording begins on Monday. Pray that the recording equipment will work well for the duration of the recording. Please pray for travel safety, health, and great unity as everyone comes together to bring Tip Lewis and His Lamp to life.

This story is truly life-changing and has been a top-selling book since we first printed it this past November. We have no doubt that this story can be and will be used in a mighty way to lead people to Christ and help disciple believers.

Also keep our bindery team and equipment in prayer as they are kept very busy in order to continue to make books like this available. We are working on updating our equipment and are getting closer to being able to make some updates to our bindery.

Thank you again for your ever faithful prayer support!

In His service,

Sarah Prenevost
Office Administrator
