The Gates of Jerusalem, or, WALL TO WALL WORKERS

The Gates of Jerusalem, or, WALL TO WALL WORKERS

319 The Gates of Jerusalem   Neh.3
Gates—the place of Coming and going—for Travellers. Of Buying and selling—for Merchants. Of Pleading and judging—for Judges and elders. Of Reading the law—for Preachers.
  1 The Sheep Gate—no the North wall—Sacrifice  Neh.3:1; John 1:29; 5:2 Warren Wiersbe  q.v.
(Sheep led in to be offered on the altar)
  2 The Fish Gate—on the North side—Evangelistic service  Neh.3:3; Mark 1:17
(Fishermen went in and out with their catch)
  3 The Old Gate—Probably the Damascus Gate—Age-long Truths  Neh.3:6; Jeremiah.6:16 Warren Wiersbe
  4 The Valley Gate—on the West—Humility  Neh.3:13; Phil.2:5 (Philippians 2:1-11, Warren Wiersbe)
  5 The Dung Gate—on the Western wall-Persecution  Neh.3:14; 1 Cor.4:13
(Filth was carried through this to the Valley of Hinnom)
6 The Gate of the FountainThe Fountain Gate--on the South-East—The Spirit’s Fulness  Neh.3:15; John 7:37-39 Warren Wiersbe put Eph.5:26,27 with the Fountain Gate instead of with The Water Gate
(Near the Pool of Siloam from which water was drawn for the temple)
  7 The Water Gate—on the Eastern wall—Cleansing by the Word.  Neh.3:26; 8:1; Eph.5:26,27
(Where the people heard God’s Word)
  8 The Horse Gate—overlooking the Kedron Valley—Warfare   Neh.3:28; 1 Tim.6:12; Job 39:19,25
(Through which horses passed on the way to battle)
  9 The East Gate—East of the Temple—Hope of Christ’s Coming  Neh.3:29; Rev.22:16
  10 The Gate Miphkad—Appointment or Review—Judgment Seat of Christ  Neh.3:31; 2 Corinthians 5:10 Warren Wiersbe adds 1 Corinthians 3:10-15, 2 Corinthians 5:9-10, and Romans 14:10-12
The Gate Hammiphkad (Nehemiah 3:31) The Hebrew word has a military connotation and refers to the mustering of the troops for numbering and inspection.  The NIV and NASB both render it “the Inspection Gate.” This is where the army was reviewed and registered. When Jesus comes again, He’ll gather His own and review their works to ready us to receive rewards from Him for faithful service to Him (1 Cor. 3:10-15; 2 Cor. 5:9-10; Rom. 14:10-12).

"The Strait Gate"

maxresdefault

Jesus was close to the end of His earthly life when He preached the words of Matthew 7:13-14 in the Sermon on the Mount.  He was reminding His followers to turn their backs on sinful, self-centered ways of living and to start living in full submission to Him.  Jesus warned, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23).  This is hard for us to do—in fact, it’s impossible without the help of the Holy Spirit.  This is why Jesus promised that when He returned to His Father, He would send His Holy Spirit to help us in our weaknesses.

From Darkness to Light

Sorryit's been so long since you wrote and then I didn't reply.  (You wrote me after my last missive about memories evoked by Billy Graham's passing), or, no, it was after my Easter 2017 missive to the SHS Class of ’66.  I was pleasantly surprised by you telling me you had been at the same crusade that I was at in the ASU Sun Devil Stadium Sunday, April 26, 1964, wasn't it?

That one crusade really made a difference in my life.  E.g. did you ever get my missive to the Class of ’66 about my nights vandalizing windows and Arcadia doors behind my Sctsdl home?  That was $5,000 damage.  After the crusade where I believed on the Lord Jesus Christ and was saved, I began feeling guilty about the crime and though it took 5 years (from my age of 16 until I was 21), I called the Scottsdale contractor on the phone and confessed the whole dark deed.  (I had learned that restitution was something Jesus wanted me to do, according to the Bible.)  The contractor basically said, “Forget it, the insurance company has already paid for that.”  Whew!

And that’s not the only change that Jesus has brought about in my life.  He’s delivered me from pornography and given me the power to overcome that.  My cousin who doesn’t want to be named had our own collection of Playboy magazines, but after I got saved, I tossed mine.  He later became  saved too and destroyed his half. I lived for girls in grade school and high school, but after my salvation experience, I live for God.  One SHS guy, whom I won’t name either, and I paid to go to Cinema Portofino in Scottsdale to see an X rated movie. Paid! And paid dearly, as porn is addicting. I even remember the film’s name though I’d like to forget it forever!   Praise Jesus he saved me from the power of sin!  From my warped view of women, I now have a wonderful view of the opposite sex (1 Corinthians 6:18; 1 Corinthians 7) & a wonderful wife.

I just had inguinal surgery to sew up 2 lateral hernias in my colon.  3 incisions, w/ dissolvable internal sutures (stitches).
I get 4-6 weeks off work!  (Starting 11-1)
And I love it!

I am still bruised on my abdomen in a couple of places, but then I think that Christ was bruised for me, too, and He hurt a lot more than I do --
But he was wounded and bruised for our sins. He was beaten that we might have peace; he was lashed—and we were healed!
Christ carried the burden of our sins. He was nailed to the cross, so that we would stop sinning and start living right. By his cuts and bruises you are healed.
And God speaking to the snake (Satan) in the Garden of Eden, after he had tricked Eve (and Adam followed) into eating the forbidden fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, said, "“And I will put enmity (open hostility) between you and the woman, And between your seed (offspring) and her Seed; He shall [fatally] bruise your head, And you shall [only] bruise His heel.”

Have you asked Christ to save you from your sins?

How Sin Traps Us and Holds us Captive (Proverbs 5:22-23)

How does sin trap us and hold us captive? (Proverbs 5:22–23)

22
The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them;
the cords of their sins hold them fast.
23
For lack of discipline they will die,
led astray by their own great folly.

I think all the previous comments on ebible.com have been good and would like to vote them all up. I also found something in a Bible Commentary by Wiersbe I have and is even online, too:
"Their experience goes from freedom to bondage (vv. 21-23). Freedom of choice is one of the privileges God has given us, but He instructs us and urges us to use that freedom wisely. The laws of God are guideposts to lead us on the path of life, and He watches the decisions we make and the roads we take. “The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good” (15:3).

As long as we use our freedom wisely, we will mature in Christian character, and God can trust us with more freedom. But if we abuse our freedom and deliberately disobey His Word, our freedom will gradually become bondage, the kind of bondage that can’t easily be broken. “The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him; the cords of his sin hold him fast” (5:22 NIV). Those words could have been used as an epitaph for Samson (Judg 13–16).

It’s impossible to sin without being bound. One of the deceitful things about sin is that it promises freedom but only brings slavery. “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin” (John 8:34 NKJV). “Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?” (Rom 6:16 NKJV).

The cords of sin get stronger the more we sin, yet sin deceives us into thinking we’re free and can quit sinning whenever we please. As the invisible chains of habit are forged, we discover to our horror that we don’t have the strength to break them. Millions of people in our world today are in one kind of bondage or another and are seeking for deliverance, but the only One who can set them free is Jesus Christ. “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed” (John 8:36 NKJV).

No wonder the father warns his children to stay away from the adulteress. “Remove your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house” (Prov 5:8 NKJV). “Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death” (7:27)."

HOW ADULTERY LEADS TO DEATH

How might adultery lead to death (Proverbs 2:18)?

16 So you will be delivered from the forbidden[a] woman,
from the adulteress[b] with her smooth words,
17 who forsakes the companion of her youth
    and forgets the covenant of her God;
18 for her house sinks down to death,
and her paths to the departed;[c]
19 none who go to her come back,
nor do they regain the paths of life.

20 So you will walk in the way of the good
and keep to the paths of the righteous.
21 For the upright will inhabit the land,
and those with integrity will remain in it,
22 but the wicked will be cut off from the land,
and the treacherous will be rooted out of it.

I would that Solomon is speaking of the possibility of both spiritual and physical death.

He has indicated in the cited passage that the woman in question has already sinned by forsaking the companion of her youth (which I interpret to mean committing adultery against her husband) and also disregarding God's explicit prohibition of adultery in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:14). The man with whom she commits adultery joins her in this sin, thus endangering his own spiritual welfare and potentially leading to eternal separation from God after this life.

However (as Solomon made more explicitly clear in other passages in Proverbs, such as Proverbs 6:32-35), the man's peril is not only spiritual but also physical (including possible death) as a result of the vengeance that the woman's betrayed husband will seek against him as a result of being a party to her adultery. (And that does not even consider the more modern perils or consequences (also including potential death) of disease that one might contract as a result of sexual activity with someone who is promiscuous.)

I agree with Tim and would add that this "strange" (foreign), that is, the forbidden woman, knows how to use flattery to her advantage. ISBE says, “The Hebrew zar, translated "stranger," meant primarily one "who turns aside," i.e. to visit another country; then a "sojourner," "stranger." The "strange woman" of Proverbs 2:16 is a technical term for "harlot"; compare Judges 11:1, 2 where "son of a strange (the Revised Version (British and American) "another") woman" (11:2, 'acher) is parallel to "the son of a harlot" (11:1).”

She doesn't respect God b/c she breaks his law (Exodus 20:14), the 7th Commandment. Too, she disrespects her husband b/c she violates the vows she made to her husband, her wedding vows. She's lost the Lord and her hubby as her guide and friend b/c she's chosen the path of sin. All who listen to what she says or does what she wants is heading to the cemetery.
